VIRGINIA BEACH — An April trial date has been set in the child pornography possession case against a sonar technician stationed at NAS Oceana Dam Neck Annex.
U.S. Navy Petty Officer First Class Andrew Keane Davis, 35, is accused of possessing child pornography and advertising it online. He was arrested by the Virginia Beach Police Department on Nov. 1, and charged with five counts of possession of child pornography.
Davis’ case will be heard by a grand jury on Feb. 21. His case has been scheduled for trial on April 10 in Virginia Beach Circuit Court.
He has been confined to a Navy base without access to computers since he was granted a $10,000 bond on Nov. 2.
Davis has been in the Navy for 16 years. He is currently a Virginia Beach-based sonar technician who reports to the Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, which is based at Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Commander Corey Barker said in a November interview with Southside Daily.
Davis, who works in a “junior leadership role,” is one of a small group of technicians who maintain sonar systems and equipment operating on surface ships and submarines. His work includes maintaining underwater surveillance and using sonar equipment to find and analyze targets, navigate vessels, and conduct search and rescue operations, Barker said.
Barker said the alleged child pornography incident happened at a private home in Virginia Beach, and the Navy doesn’t believe any government computer systems were affected.
