NORFOLK — One Norfolk brewery is doing its best to be environmentally conscious, and their efforts are being rewarded.
Coelacanth Brewing Company, which has been in business for just over a year, has earned the 2016 Virginia Green Travel Leader Award. The award will be presented at the 4th annual Virginia Green Travel Conference & Awards at the University of Virginia on Feb. 17.
“We are incredibly proud to recognize Coelacanth Brewing as a Virginia Green Travel Leader,” said Tom Griffin, the executive director of the Virginia Green Travel Alliance in a news release. “The growth of the Virginia Green program statewide has been remarkable, and our awards program is a celebration of that progress. Virginia Green Travel partners are truly leading our program’s efforts to reduce the environmental impacts of the industry and to increase green tourism business in Virginia.”
The Virginia Green program works with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Virginia Restaurant, Lodging & Travel Association and the Virginia Green Travel Alliance to motivate Virginia tourism businesses to embrace green practices.
“We’re one of only five breweries in the state to be recognized so we are especially proud. As Hampton Roads’ first and only certified green brewery, we invite other breweries to join us in our commitment to reduce the environmental impacts of producing great beer.” said Kevin Erskine, founder and president of Coelacanth.
