Two Williamsburg-James City County schools and several York County schools have been recognized by the state for their academic achievements.
Mount Vernon Elementary School and Waller Mill Elementary School, both located in York County, and Matoaka Elementary School in James City County each have received a Board of Education Excellence award.
This award is the second tier of the Virginia Index of Performance awards, which recognize schools that exceed state and federal accountability standards and achieve excellence goals established by Gov. Terry McAuliffe and the board, according to a state news release.
The Excellence award recognizes schools that have met state and federal benchmarks and made significant progress toward student-achievement goals. Mount Vernon, Waller Mill and Matoaka are among 104 schools in the state that received an Excellence award in 2016.
Stonehouse Elementary School in James City County and eight schools in York County — Bethel Manor Elementary, Coventry Elementary, Grafton High, Magruder Elementary, Seaford Elementary, Tabb Elementary, Tabb High and York High — received Board of Education Distinguished Achievement awards.
The Distinguished Achievement award, the third tier of the VIP awards, recognizes schools that have met state and federal benchmarks and have made progress toward goals outlined by the governor and the board.
The nine area schools were among 166 in the state that received a Distinguished Achievement award in 2016.
