WILLIAMSBURG — The Virginia Beer Company (VBC) found its name on the list of Virginia breweries that received awards at the 2022 Virginia Craft Beer Cup.

The Williamsburg-based brewery took home second place in the German and American Wheat category for its Saving Daylight Beer.

The Virginia Craft Brewers Guild (VCBG), organizers of the statewide competition, announced the list of winners Monday, Aug. 8 at Hardywood Park Craft Brewery’s West Creek location.

“It’s always really fun and gratifying when our beers win awards, both local and international in scale,” said VBC Brewmaster Jonathan Newman in an email to WYDaily. “Medals from the Virginia Craft Beer Cup are particularly fun and meaningful as we know the beers are tasted by highly qualified judges, and then the medals are awarded in front of a large group of our brewing industry friends and peers.

“It is good fun to see everybody at the event and celebrate their wins and ours in such a collaborative industry,” he continued. “On a more personal note, Saving Daylight was the first beer I started developing in my garage for Virginia Beer Company — years before we got the brewery open. So getting recognition for a beer that has been with us since before the beginning is really meaningful, as well.”

A record 106 breweries competed in this year’s competition, which included 14 new participants, according to VCGB. Brewers could submit up to four beers to be judged in 33 different categories. A record 396 beers were entered in the competition, VCGB said.

This year’s Virginia Craft Beer Cup was managed by Head Judge Charlie Harr, taking place at Old Ox Brewery in Ashburn.

“Wow, what a great competition,” said Harr, “It was clearly evident in the tight race that every brewery is extremely dedicated to the craft and their dedication is inspiring. This year’s competition proves Virginia has some of the best craft brewers in the nation.”
