James City County Parks and Recreation Releases Event Schedule for August

WILLIAMSBURG — August has arrived, and with that comes a final month of recreational summer events offered by James City County Parks & Recreation.

The following is a list of activities scheduled for this month. Note: Days, times, fees, ages, and locations vary from program to program.

Arts & Special Interest

Carving & Decorating on Greenware 
Age: Ages 16+
Days: Saturday, Aug. 13, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 14, 1-5 p.m. 
Fee: $60 (both sessions)
Location: James City County Recreation Center 
A two-day workshop where the class focuses on adding decoration through carving & mark-making on greenware. Students are provided extra carving tools and one leather hard cylinder to follow along with the Saturday demonstration. Participants are asked to bring throwing and carving tools and a sketchbook.
Materials Fee: $20, by cash or check, due at beginning of the workshop. Instructor: Katherine Maloney. 

Before/After School, Camps
All summer camp sites for REC Connect and T.O.P.S are full. However, a waitlist has been started should cancellations occur. For more information, call 757-259-5351.

Gait Analysis 
Age: Ages 10+ FREE!
Days: Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m.-noon
Fee: Free
Location: James City County Recreation Center 
Local sports chiropractor Dr. Daniel Shaye of Performance Chiropractic will be performing a FREE gait analysis. Participants are asked to wear shorts and a tank-type shirt for the best analysis. Call 757-259-4176 to schedule your time slot. 

Learn to Row 
Age: 14+ 
Days: Saturday, Aug. 6, 10-10:45 a.m. 
Fee: Free
Location: James City County Recreation Center
A free introduction to Indoor Rowing using our indoor rowing machines (ergs). The class offers step-by-step instructions with a focus on proper form.

Walk This Way: Williamsburg Walking Club 
Age: 14+ FREE!
Days: Saturdays, Aug. 6 and Aug. 20, 9-10 a.m. 
Fee: Free
Location: Powhatan Creek Trail
Join up with walking coaches as they guide you through the trails of James City County. New trail start location each month. 

Age: 14+ 
Days: Thursday, Aug. 18, 6-7 p.m.
Fee: $8
Location: James City County Recreation Center
Yoga for triathletes. The class is offered to all levels and focuses on building core strength and mental strength, increasing upper-body muscle strength, breathing, and improving hip, quad, and hamstring flexibility.

Drumming for Wellness
Age: 16+ 
Days: Wednesday, Aug. 10, 5:30-7 p.m.
Fee: Free
Location: Freedom Park
The workshop uses drums and voice to practice mindfulness. Students of the workshop will learn basic drumming and meditation techniques, participate in drum circles and sound immersion. No prior musical experience is required and all of the instruments are provided.

Group Fitness Classes 
Age: 14+
James City County Recreation Center is offering a range of more than 60 fitness classes including Ageless Yoga and Zumba. A full list of classes offered weekly can be found online at the fitness schedule. Info: 757-259-4176.

Inclusion/Therapeutic Recreation

Sensory Friendly Movie Night 
Age: All Ages & Abilities
Days: Friday, Aug. 19, 6-8 p.m. 
Fee: $5/family 
James City County Recreation Center 
Enjoy a movie in a safe and accommodating environment with family and friends. Popcorn and snacks are included. Registration is required, the registration deadline is Aug. 12.

Take Your Kid Fishing 
Age: 5-12 
Days: Saturday, Aug. 20,  10 a.m.-noon
Fee: Free
Location: Little Creek Reservoir Park 
Parents have an opportunity to take their child fishing at Little Creek Reservoir Park. Park staff will help teach you and your child the fundamentals of fishing. All equipment is provided.

Explore Powhatan Creek by Kayak 
Age: 16+ 
Days: Monday, Aug. 15, 5:30-7:30 p.m.  
Fee: Free
Location: James City County Marina
Participants will learn about the natural and historic resources of Powhatan Creek and the James River with a specific focus on the native flora of Powhatan Creek. Registration is required — visit Registration opens at least two weeks before the date of the program. Paddle craft, paddles, and personal flotation devices provided. 

Adult Learn to Row 

Age: 18+ 
Days: Saturdays and Sundays, Aug.13-28, 8:45-10:30 a.m.  
Location: Chickahominy Riverfront Park 
Rowers can learn the basics of the boat, rowing technique, and navigation leading to a capability of rowing in an adult practice by the program’s end. Rowers should be able to swim. For more information contact: or visit for updates. Program cost is $200, with 50% applicable to rowing membership with the Williamsburg Boat Club.  

Full Moon Hike 
Age: All Ages 
Days: Friday, Aug. 12, 8:03 p.m. (sunset)
Fee: Free
Location: Freedom Park
Participants can explore the “PARK AFTER DARK” in a self-guided hike during the full moon nights of summer! Visitors may only use Multiuse Trail 3. Users must depart the park by the closing time — 9 p.m. — and must stay on Trail 3 after sunset.

Campfire Social 
Age: All Ages FREE!
Days: Saturday, Aug. 13, 7-8 p.m. 
Fee: Free
Location: Chickahominy Riverfront Park 
Visitors can enjoy smores, storytelling and other activities around a campfire overlooking Gordon Creek.

Forest Explorer Fridays: Bats 
Age: All Ages/Families FREE!
Days: Friday, Aug. 19, 6:30-8 p.m. 
Fee: Free
Location: Freedom Park 
Participants can learn about bats with a formal presentation, bath-themed games, and exploration of the meadow and free black settlement. Weather permitting.

Inclement Weather/Cancellations
All Outdoor Events are weather permitting. Before heading out, please call the Activities Hotline at 757-259-3232 any changes in schedules.  

Holiday Closures
The James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center will be closed Monday, Sept. 5 for Labor Day.

All County parks are open year-round.

The Park Stores/Guest Services Offices at Chickahominy Riverfront Park, Little Creek Reservoir Park, James City County Marina and Freedom Park are open.
