WILLIAMSBURG — A fourth-grade summer school class at Laurel Lane Elementary School discovered a creative way to make ice cream last week.

The group of young students learned how to use Greek Yogurt to create an ice cream-like dessert. The lesson was a part of the School Health Initiative Progam (SHIP) at Williamsburg-James City County (WJCC) Schools.

SHIP is a partnership between WJCC Public Schools and Williamsburg Health Foundation (WHF) to support the health and wellness of the division’s staff and students. The program strives to accomplish its mission of creating a healthier community by promoting healthy eating and active lifestyle habits in schools, homes, and the community.

The summer school activity incorporated reading, math, and science. At the same time, it provided students with a hands-on activity to learn how salt combines with ice. The students learned to create their ice-cream-like desserts without using any machines.
