Hundreds of people gathered in front of the Williamsburg-James City County courthouse Sunday afternoon to demand justice for George Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer in Minneapolis pressed a knee into his neck.
The now former officer, Derek Chauvin, 44, was arrested Friday and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin, who was fired along with three other officers who were at the scene, faces more than 12 years in prison if convicted of murder.
Numerous protests have been going on in several cities around the U.S., including in Hampton Roads and the Peninsula.
Gov. Ralph Northam on Sunday declared a state of emergency, citing “escalating violence across the Commonwealth.”
