WILLIAMSBURG 一 Early bird pricing for BurgQuest, the annual gaming, fantasy and nerd-culture convention, ends Sunday, with the event itself now taking place at the Greater Williamsburg Sports & Event Center Sept. 25-27.
Weekend badges are $30 for guests 12 and older through the end of August, rising to $40 starting in September. Prices for ages 6-12 rise from $15 to $20, and children 5 and under attend free with adult supervision.
Highlights for this year’s event include the return of the free-play board game library with hundreds of titles, and six musical acts including Grooveburg, an 18-piece brass band from Williamsburg that plays arrangements of video game music. Ross Bryant will record a live episode of his “Push the Roll” role-playing game podcast.
Additionally, Ify Nwadiwe, the current host of the streaming service Dropout’s “Um, Actually,” will perform at BurgQuest as well as host workshops.
“This year BurgQuest is going to be the biggest one yet,” said Adam Stackhouse, owner of AVAdventures Productions, who is producing the event.
There will also be game demonstrations, tournaments, private game sessions and interactive activities such as an archery tag challenge utilizing the sports center’s turf.
The cosplay programming, chaired by professional cosplayer Chiara Scuro, features guests, extended workshops and a contest. Cosplayers Gravel Road Cosplay and Jinafiire, along with prop designer Bash the Prop Slayer, will present workshops, panels and judging.
The contest, divided into categories by experience level, is open to novice through highly experienced cosplayers and offers more than $1,000 in cash and prizes. Competitors can get direct feedback from the judges at a panel Sunday.
Starting in September, single day passes on Saturday or Sunday are $30 for guests 12 and older and $15 for ages 6-12; single day passes are not available for Friday.
The event will run Friday, Sept. 25, from 7 p.m. to midnight; Saturday, Sept. 26, from noon to midnight; and Sunday, Sept. 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
