WILLIAMSBURG — The Colonial Williamsburg Public Auction is coming up on July 5 and will feature a flag from the Governor’s Palace as one of the auction listings.

The Public Auction has taken place in the historic area for many years. The event used to take place on an auction stage behind Market House, but has since moved just off to the side of the market house.

“One of the fun things about the auction is that not only can people come and bid on historic area items or things that are made by craftspeople reproductions, but we do some really cool things like the Grand Union flags that are flown at the buildings. When those become faded and need to be retired, the foundation gives those to us to auction, and those are really things that are sought after,” said Heather Hufton, Senior Manager, E-Commerce & Marketing, for the Shops at Colonial Williamsburg.

Hufton also noted that typically a certificate is included with flags showing the date and authenticity. Another featured item is the auction bell engraved by the jeweler’s trade shop. The one-of-a-kind bell is created for every auction.

The auctions are free to attend and are kid-friendly. The auctioneer is in costume and persona for the event.

A percentage of the profits from the auction help support the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

The event will be held July 5 at 1 p.m. Auctions are weather-dependent and subject to cancellation. For more information about the auction or upcoming public auctions, visit the official website.
