NEWPORT NEWS — Former Vice President Joe Biden will meet with the United Steelworkers Local 8888 and shipbuilding workers at the Newport News Shipyard Friday.

Biden is scheduled to meet with the union at 3 p.m., and then greet workers at the 46 Street gate during shift change, according to the union’s news release.

“He has always been a friend of the labor union,” said Charles Spivey, president of USW Local 8888.

Spivey said before Biden arrives, there will be a luncheon with a couple location politicians endorsed by the union, including Rep. Bobby Scott, (D-3rd district) and Elaine Eluria.

Biden’s wife, Jill, is scheduled to christen the Virginia-Class Submarine Delaware (SSN 791) Saturday morning. It is unclear if the former vice president will attend the christening.
