NEWPORT NEWS — The city’s public schools announced the Class of 2018 graduation’s rate was higher than the statewide average, citing a report from the Virginia Department of Education.
The school district’s on-time graduation rate was 93 percent and the drop-out rate was 12 percent, according a news release from Newport News Public Schools.
“We are proud of our graduates and their success. Earning a high school diploma is an important milestone for young people; it prepares them for success whether they go to college, enter the military or join the workforce,” said George Parker, superintendent of NNPS. “By partnering with families, businesses and the community, we are providing the support that our students need to build successful futures.”
According to the VDOE’s report, Virginia’s graduation rate for 2018 is 91.6 percent and the drop-out rate is 5.5 percent.
