NEWPORT NEWS — Christopher Newport University will be offering a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience starting January.

The university’s proposal was approved by the State Council of Higher Education, according to a news release from the university.

“When looking at the total number of STEM degrees awarded by CNU over the past few years, we realized our neuroscience students were not counting,” said Andrew Velkey, director of the neuroscience program at CNU.

Previously, CNU offered a bachelor of science degree in interdisciplinary studies with a major in neuroscience, according to the university.

“We know there are various scholarships and grants available that require a STEM degree as a prerequisite, so providing a neuroscience degree will pay off in the long run for those who aspire to attend graduate school and beyond,” Velkey said.

Courses in the new neuroscience degree include a senior seminar and the first graduating class will be in the fall of next year, according to the university.
