Here’s an update on emergency shelters in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS —The city has closed its shelter at Warwick High School and Menchville High School. Residents needing to evacuate can go to the state-managed shelter at Christopher Newport University.

Anyone arriving at the CNU shelter with pets will have their animals taken to the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter. Owners must bring pets in a cage and provide food and any required medications, according to a news release from the city.

Recreation Centers

Hours at City community centers have been modified for Thursday, September 13th and Friday, September 14th as follows:

  • Brittingham-Midtown Community Center 

Closes at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Open 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday.

  • Denbigh Community Center 

Closes at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Open 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday.

  • Doris Miller Community Center 

Closes at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Open 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday.

  • Downing-Gross Cultural Art Center 

Closes at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Friday.

Closed Saturday.

Courthouse Way Community Center, Huntington Park Tennis Center, Riverview Gymnastic Center and all Active Lifestyle Centers are closed until Monday.

Parking

The parking garage at the corner of Fountain Way and Thimble Shoals Boulevard in City Center (100 Fountain Way) is available for Newport News residents of low-lying areas to park their vehicles from now through the weekend.

Solid waste collections

Next week’s regular collections will be delayed one day.
