Body found at Buckroe Beach

HAMPTON — Authorities say the body recovered Sunday in the waters of Buckroe Beach may be that of a swimmer reported missing Friday.

It started with a call at around 7:30 p.m. Friday of a man that walked into the water at the beach “and appeared to be struggling to stay afloat after getting into the water.”

“The Hampton Police Division’s Homeland Security Unit, and the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue’s Marine Emergency Response Team, along with the United States Coast Guard responded to the area in an attempt to locate the individual,” authorities wrote in a news release.

The search continued Saturday, but “all efforts on this date proved unsuccessful in locating the missing swimmer,” police said.

Then around 12:50 p.m. Sunday, divers from the Hampton Police Division and the Hampton Division of Fire and Rescue assigned to the Hampton Public Safety Dive Team, found a man’s body.

The body was taken to Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the official cause of death.

He has not been identified.
