NEWPORT NEWS — Newport News public schools will have a new superintendent.
George Parker III was appointed as superintendent by the city school board and will begin his term on July 1, according to a news release from the city.
Parker is currently the superintendent of Caroline County Public Schools.
He will replace Brian Nichols, who has served as the school superintendent since Dec. 5 after Ashby Kilgore retired last October. Kilgore served for 10 years.
The school board’s search included 44 applicants from 32 states including 13 from Virginia, according to the news release.
During his time in school systems along Hampton Roads, Parker has increased access to college and career opportunities, expanded STEM education initiatives, increased student access to technology and partnered with businesses for student internships, according to the news release.
Parker has a bachelor’s degree in computer science and a master’s degree in educational leadership from Norfolk State University and a PhD in education leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech.
