WILLIAMSBURG 一 The Williamsburg City Council will meet Aug. 13 at 2 p.m. Among the items on the agenda are special use permits for Matthew Whaley Elementary and Berkeley Middle schools, a monthly financial report on tourism and a construction bid for the African American Heritage Trail.
Two special use permits are up for consideration, both for Williamsburg schools. One would extend the use of temporary learning cottages at Matthew Whaley Elementary School. The other would add a walk-in freezer, storage shed and basketball court at Berkeley Middle School.
Next up is the reports. Two will be given: the monthly financial report and the update on the Williamsburg Comprehensive Plan.
The council will also discuss:
- Tourism Promotion Contingency Fund request
- The Tourism Promotional Contingency Fund is asking for $5,000 for TEA to host a reception at the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center. The multi-day event would feature networking, education, business development and tours.

- The FY27 Line of Duty Act Payment
- The city will consider its $127,143 FY27 payment under Virginia’s Line of Duty Act, which provides benefits to public safety employees and volunteers disabled in the line of duty. The expense is already included in the city’s budget but requires council approval because it exceeds $100,000.
- Emergency sewer main repair
- Council will consider a $262,507 contract to line 2,772 linear feet of a 16-inch gravity sewer main using a cure-in-place lining. A significant blockage was discovered during routine maintenance and an inspection found several major fractures in the pipe.
The meeting will then enter closed session before adjournment. It will begin at 2 p.m. at the Stryker Center, 412 N. Boundary St. The next meeting is scheduled for Sept. 10.
