HISTORIC TRIANGLE — A range of events are planned across the Historic Triangle this weekend to mark Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is the U.S. holiday honoring military personnel who died in service to the country. It originated after the Civil War, which ended in 1865 and remains the deadliest conflict in American history. In the late 1860s, communities began holding spring tributes to fallen soldiers, often decorating graves with flowers, giving rise to its early name, Decoration Day.
The first widely recognized observance was May 30, 1868, organized by Gen. John A. Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic. The date was chosen because it did not mark the anniversary of any specific battle. After World War I, the observance was expanded to honor U.S. military personnel who died in all wars.
In 1971, Memorial Day became a federal holiday and was moved to the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend. While it is often viewed as the unofficial start of summer, its purpose remains solemn: to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
In honor of the holiday, several Memorial Day events are planned around the historic triangle.
- The American Legion Holloway-Moore Post 273 in Poquoson hosts its annual Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 25, at 10 a.m. at Poquoson City Hall.
- Colonial Williamsburg will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. on the palace green on May 25. The historic attraction is offering free admission to all active duty, reservists, retirees, and veterans throughout the weekend.

Baskin, Captain, U.S. Navy (retired), a Naval Academy graduate and distinguished submarine officer, whose service included the Cuban Missile Crisis and assignments aboard the USS Nautilus.
- On Monday, May 25, Frothy Moon Brewhouse will offer customers the opportunity to purchase a beer in honor of the fallen. The beers will remain on the bar throughout the day alongside stars bearing each service member’s name and dates of service.
