Demonstrators Gather At Williamsburg Courthouse For May Day Rally

WILLIAMSBURG – Over 100 residents gathered Friday evening outside the Williamsburg-James City County Courthouse for a May Day Rally aimed at supporting working families and strengthening local communities.

Held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the courthouse on Monticello Avenue, the rally was organized by Williamsburg JCC Indivisible and Virginia Organizing in coordination with the national May Day Strong coalition.

The event was part of a nationwide day of action focused on advocating for working families. Organizers said the Williamsburg rally brought together workers, students, families, and other community members for a peaceful gathering that included chants and opportunities to connect.

A participant reflected on the connection between past activism and present-day demonstrations.

Participants were encouraged to support the effort by shopping locally and reducing spending at large corporations. Organizers also collected donations to assist newly arrived families in the local community.

According to organizers, many families are facing increasing pressure from rising housing, grocery, healthcare, and childcare costs, while economic gains are becoming more concentrated at the top.

The rally highlighted issues including support for working families through fair economic policies, encouraging civic participation and protecting fair elections, and strengthening local communities and small businesses.

Organizers described the event as a peaceful, community-focused gathering open to participants of all backgrounds.
