JAMES CITY COUNTY— Weather and schedule permitting, contractor crews with the Virginia Department of Transportation will begin striping new pavement markings overnight Thursday, March 5, to implement a permanent, unsignalized continuous “Green T” intersection at Fieldstone Parkway and Old Stage Road (Route 30). The work is part of the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project.
Alternating overnight lane closures on Old Stage Road are scheduled from as early as 7 p.m. to as late as 6 a.m., beginning Thursday, March 5, to establish the new configuration.
The updated traffic pattern is expected to open to motorists as early as 6 a.m. Saturday, March 7. The configuration is designed to allow free-flowing traffic through the intersection, reduce travel times and improve safety.
Under the new pattern:
-
The left lane of northbound Old Stage Road will serve as a single through lane. The right lane will be designated as a right-turn-only lane onto northbound Fieldstone Parkway.
-
The right lane of southbound Old Stage Road will remain a through lane. The left lane will be designated as a left-turn-only lane onto northbound Fieldstone Parkway.
-
Motorists traveling southbound on Fieldstone Parkway and turning left onto southbound Old Stage Road will enter a dedicated acceleration lane to merge with traffic.
-
U-turns will be permitted in both directions on Old Stage Road.
The traffic configuration will be permanent.
Motorists are urged to use caution in work zones, obey posted speed limits, follow lane markings and barrier guides, watch for digital message signs and avoid distractions while driving.
The I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project began in November 2024 and is expected to be completed as early as late 2027. The project includes widening and rehabilitating 9 miles of I-64, as well as repairing, rehabilitating and widening two bridges over Six Mount Zion Road. Additional work includes installing overhead signage, advanced traffic management technology systems, sound barrier walls, retaining walls and storm drainage infrastructure.
The broader I-64 Gap Widening effort is divided into Segments A, B and C, each constructed as an operationally independent project to improve connectivity between Richmond and Hampton Roads. The overall goal is to reduce congestion and improve safety by widening approximately 29 miles of travel lanes, adding a 12-foot-wide third lane and 10-foot-wide paved shoulders in both directions. The corridor currently narrows to two lanes in each direction between sections that carry three lanes, creating what transportation officials have called “the gap.”
