ICYMI: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Closures Around the Historic Triangle

HISTORIC TRIANGLE — Here is how local offices and services are impacted by the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday.

James City County

James City County announced offices, facilities, services and libraries will observe the following schedule for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday:

County Offices:
Closed Jan. 19.

James City County Recreation Center and Abram Frink Jr. Community Center:
Open Jan. 19.

Parks:
All County parks are open year-round.

Park Stores and Guest Services Offices:
Closed Jan. 19.

Jolly Pond Road and Toano Convenience Centers:
Open Jan. 19.

Tewning Road Convenience Center:
Closed on Mondays.

Garbage Transfer Station:
Open Jan. 19.

Curbside Recycling:
No change.

Libraries:
Closed Jan. 19.

Poquoson

Poquoson announced all non-emergency city offices will be closed for the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Williamsburg

The City of Williamsburg announced offices will be closed Monday, Jan. 19, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. This includes all offices in the Municipal Building on Lafayette Street and Quarterpath Recreation Center. 

Waller Mill Park will follow normal operating hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Garbage and recycling will be collected on their regular schedule Monday and Tuesday. 

For water emergencies after hours, on weekends, or on holidays, residents should call 757-220-2331. More information is available at williamsburgva.gov/publicworks. 

Those who need to pay a city bill when offices are closed are reminded a 24-hour bill payment dropbox is located at the front of the Municipal Building for city transactions. Payments can also be made online. The city cautions dropbox payments made on Monday, Jan. 19, will not be posted until Tuesday, Jan. 20. 

York County

York County said the following government offices and courts will be closed in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Monday, Jan. 19:

  • County government offices
  • Courts
  • York-Poquoson Social Services
  • Virginia Cooperative Extension
  • York County Libraries

The Transfer Station, Recycling Dropoff, and VPPSA Compost Facility located at the Waste Management Center will be open; however, the on-site administrative offices will be closed, the county said. Garbage and recycling are not affected by the holiday. Residents are reminded to place their trash and recycling containers at the roadside by 7 a.m. on their regular collection day.
