GLOUCESTER — The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society recently announced a $75,000 Matching Gift Challenge, offering the community an opportunity to double its impact on the lives of homeless pets this holiday season and into the new year.
Every day, GMHS says more animals in need arrive seeking safety, care, and the chance to find a loving home. Many require medical treatment for illness or injury. Others need time, compassion, and emotional healing. All of them need the community’s support.
According to the shelter, it takes $311,555 annually — $25,962 every month — just to provide essential medical care for pets in their care. This includes life-saving treatments, diagnostics, food, formula, and the utilities required to keep the facility warm, safe, and fully operational. These resources also support the GMHS Pet Pantry, which helps local families facing hardship keep their pets fed and at home.
From now through Jan. 31, two anonymous supporters will match every monetary donation — dollar for dollar — up to $75,000. This means every gift, regardless of size, will work twice as hard to support local homeless pets.
“Pets are family,” said Caitlin Donnelly, Communications & Development Manager for GMHS. “They bring comfort after difficult days, teach compassion, and help us become the best versions of ourselves. With the community’s support, GMHS will continue to save lives, complete families, and strengthen the bonds between people and pets for many years to come.”
Monetary donations can be made by mail to GMHS, P.O. Box 385, Gloucester, VA 23061, or online at gmhumanesociety.org/donate/.
For donation details, contact Caitlin Donnelly, Communications & Development Manager, at 804-693-5520 ext. 104 or development@gmhumanesociety.org.
While only monetary gifts are eligible for the match, GMHS also gratefully accepts in-kind donations such as pet food, treats, toys, and supplies, as well as donations of stocks, bonds, IRA distributions or wire transfers.
