WILLIAMSBURG — Members of the Williamsburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution came together on Dec. 13 for the annual Wreaths Across America Day wreath laying ceremony.
Wreaths Across America began in 1992 when Maine wreathmaker Morrill Worcester donated surplus holiday wreaths to Arlington National Cemetery. A viral photo in 2005 brought national attention, and the nonprofit was officially founded in 2007 to support the growing effort. Today, the organization honors veterans at thousands of cemeteries nationwide, driven by its mission to Remember, Honor, Teach.
“Today at Cedar Grove Cemetery, we come together as a community to remember and honor the veterans who served our nation in countless ways. Each name and each headstone represents a story of courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty,” Sherril Buckner, Regent of the Williamsburg DAR Chapter, said. “Hosting this ceremony is a privilege for the Williamsburg Chapter, NSDAR, as we work to ensure their service is never forgotten. Through Wreaths Across America, we are reminded that remembrance is an active choice — one that connects us to our past, strengthens our present, and inspires future generations to uphold the values these veterans defended.”
The Williamsburg Chapter has been hosting a ceremony at Cedar Grove Cemetery for four years and raises funds throughout the year for sponsorships of wreaths to ensure that every veteran buried at the cemetery has a wreath for Christmas.
At the event, both DAR and community members scattered throughout the grounds to place wreaths on the graves following a short ceremony.
Wreath sponsorships for the 2026 event are underway and can be made at the DAR’s Wreaths Across America website.
