Williamsburg Chapter, SAR supports Bringing Home Eliza Project
On Thursday, Oct. 23, the remains of Eliza Monroe Hay (1786-1840), the daughter of President James Monroe (1758-1825), were interred in the Monroe family plot, Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond. The Executive Director for James Monroe’s Highland, Sara Bon-Harper, was the Mistress of Ceremonies.
Eliza’s journey from an unmarked grave in Paris, France, to her family’s plot in Richmond was championed by Barbara Vorndick — a biographer of Eliza Hay and coordinator for the project — and an international team of philanthropists, governmental officials, historical foundations and lineage societies, according to the chapter.
The effort, considered by one James Monroe interpreter to be the “…most significant historical reparation since John Paul Jones,” included support ranging from direct descendants of Eliza Hay who served as pallbearers — Robert Patterson, Michael Kamtman, Jeremiah Kamtman, and John D. Richardson — to the Honorable George and Susan Allen as well as State Sen. Bryce E. Reeves.
Lineage societies present at the reinternment included the Sons of the American Revolution, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Society of the Daughters of 1812.
The Virginia Society, Sons of the American Revolution, was involved in the celebration of Eliza’s arrival in the United States. The participating Williamsburg Chapter members were Gary Dunaway and John Lynch, the event’s color guard commander.
Williamsburg Chapter, SAR Takes Part in Commemoration of the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Hampton
The Commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Hampton was hosted by the Thomas Nelson Jr. Chapter, SAR on Oct. 26. The battle pitted the British Royal Navy against Hampton patriot militia and a detachment from the Culpeper minutemen battalion.
The British intended to bombard Hampton in retaliation for the patriot burning of a British ship that had grounded on the shore during a storm. The Patriot riflemen were able to drive off the bombarding ships before much damage was done to the town.
Several Williamsburg Chapter SAR compatriots attended the ceremony, with several of them participating in the color guard.
