JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Virginia Department of Transportation announced it is scheduled to implement a multi-week closure of a portion of the Virginia Capital Trail along John Tyler Highway to replace the deck and substructure of a bridge.
The bridge is located between mile markers three and four along the Jamestown leg of the Virginia Capital Trail.
Starting as early as Dec. 1, VDOT said crews are scheduled to close the trail along John Tyler Highway from just east of Governor’s Landing Road to Heritage Landing Road for approximately two to three weeks, adding all work is weather-dependent and subject to change.
As part of the bridge deck replacement, VDOT said crews will be installing new composite decking boards with added texture to improve friction for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. This new composite decking is designed to provide a safe and reliable riding or walking surface.
The Virginia Capital Trail is a 52-mile bicycle and pedestrian shared-use trail that connects Virginia’s past and present state capitals of Jamestown, Williamsburg and Richmond along Route 5.
