WILLIAMSBURG — The Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society announced it will induct of four individuals into the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame at a ceremony Saturday, Oct. 11, at Ford’s Colony Country Club.
The Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development, advancement and history of aviation in the commonwealth. It said the 2025 inductees represent “an extraordinary range of achievement — spanning aerospace innovation, exploration, record-setting flight, military service and advocacy for Virginia’s aviation industry.”
The 2025 Inductees are:
- Maj. Gen. Charles F. Bolden Jr. — Former NASA Administrator, Space Shuttle astronaut, and Marine Corps aviator with over 100 combat missions and 680 hours in space. Led NASA from 2009–2017, guiding the agency into a new era of commercial spaceflight and exploration. An advocate for STEM education, he has inspired generations to pursue careers in aerospace.
- John Langford — Aerospace engineer, entrepreneur, and innovator, founder of Aurora Flight Sciences and a leader in unmanned aerial systems, advanced aircraft and electric propulsion. His visionary designs have shaped the future of autonomous and sustainable flight. A champion of STEM outreach, he has inspired the next generation of aviation leaders.
- William “Bill” Harrelson — Retired airline captain from Virginia who built and flew a high-performance Lancair IV on multiple record-setting solo flights, including over both poles and around the world. Completed a rare westbound circumnavigation against prevailing winds with just four stops. A pioneer in long-distance, homebuilt aviation.
- Daniel “Bud” Oakey — Longtime leader in Virginia’s aviation community, past chairman of the Virginia Aviation Business Association and dedicated Civil Air Patrol officer. Advocated for legislation and programs that strengthen general aviation and airport development across the commonwealth. His service and mentorship have advanced aviation safety, education, and public awareness.
“This year’s inductees embody the skill, courage, and vision that have defined Virginia’s place in aviation history,” said Tim McSwain, Board Chairman of the Virginia Aeronautical Historical Society. “Their contributions have inspired countless others and will be remembered for generations.”
The induction banquet will feature a reception, dinner and formal presentation honoring each inductee’s achievements. The event is open to the public, and reservations are required.
