JAMES CITY COUNTY— James City County Parks and Recreation employees will be working from sunup to sundown to welcome summer with its Project: FiveFortySeven — the Longest Day of Play June 20.

JCC’s Parks and Recreation team launched its initial program in 2018 to celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice and the notion that with the longest day of the year comes the longest day of play. JCC’s program, Project: FiveFortySeven, inspired a statewide initiative in 2024, known as Play All Day VA.

“More than 50 other parks and recreation agencies across the state have joined in the celebration by offering free programs and access to amenities,” said Joy Johnson, Senior Communications & Marketing Specialist for JCC Parks and Recreation.

Throughout the morning, afternoon, and evening June 20, activities are taking place around the county to influence kids and adults alike to get out and explore.

“The primary goal is to make play accessible to everyone by offering free programs, free paddlecraft and bike rentals and free access to our Rec Center and outdoor pools for the day. A secondary goal is to provide our community the opportunity to try something new — whether it’s a new activity or a visit to a park they’ve never explored before,” Johnson said.

This year’s marquee event is The Firetruck Duck Drop; a partnership between JCC Parks and Rec and the James City County Fire Department.

“We will be dropping rubber duckies off the back of the ladder truck onto targets. Those who register have the opportunity to win prizes if their duck lands on a prize area. This fun event will also feature crafts, games, a “photo op” area with large inflatable ducks and more,” Johnson said.

The duck drop is open to all ages. Preregistration is required. Registration closes on June 13.

The day will also feature free paddlecraft rentals at James City County Marina, Jamestown Beach Event Park, and Chickahominy Riverfront Park, free bike rentals at James City County Marina, free outdoor pool access at Chickahominy Riverfront Park Pool and the James City County Recreation Center, as well as free center access to the Abram Frink Jr. Community Center and the James City County Recreation Center.

While many activities are scheduled for certain times during the day, other activities will be offered the entire day, including a photo contest, a sensory-friendly scavenger hunt, and access to the 55+ lounge at the JCC Recreation Center.

“It’s important for families to get outside and explore what’s in their own backyard. This event, part of the statewide PADVA initiative, celebrates the longest day of the year through play — building community and promoting wellness. Play isn’t just fun — it’s essential for healthy development, connection and overall well-being. As parks and recreation professionals, we’re proud to champion the power of play in community life,” Johnson said.

A full schedule of activities can be found on the James City County Project: FiveFortySeven website.
