GLOUCESTER — Commuting to Gloucester may become easier for Historic Triangle residents as part of Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s budget includes nixing the toll for using the bridge.

In the 2024-2026 budget, Youngkin approved that by Jan. 1, 2026 “all rates, fees, tolls and other charges shall cease to be collected for the use of the George P. Coleman Bridge.”

The current toll cost for two-axle vehicles is $2, $3 for three-axle vehicles and $4 for four or more-axle vehicles. The toll is only paid when entering Gloucester County from York County.

“The Coleman Bridge is the undisputed gateway into Gloucester County and the Middle Peninsula. With bridge tolls set to be removed by January 1, 2026, every family in our community is likely to be affected. We’re grateful that our commuters will benefit from the financial impacts of toll relief. At the same time, we recognize the historical precedent from 1976, when the county’s growth rate spiked,” Carol Steele, Gloucester County Administrator, said.

To combat the probable growth, Steele recommends that residents get involved in the Gloucester County Strategic Plan.

“We encourage our residents who are concerned about the potential impacts of rapid growth to get involved in drafting the update to the Comprehensive Plan, which will identify growth zones and set goals for land use, economic development, protection of natural resources, etc. There will be numerous opportunities for citizens to provide input at town hall meetings and through surveys. In times of change, it’s more important than ever to work together. With citizen input, we can balance the benefits of new opportunities while preserving the best parts of our rural culture,” Steele said.

The county is still taking volunteer applications to be part of the Gloucester County Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee.
