JAMES CITY COUNTY — April is Child Abuse and Child Neglect Prevention Month, and colorful pinwheels can be found across the county honoring the month thanks to a “Pinwheels for Prevention” initiative.

The month of April is designated each year as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. It encourages awareness and showcases different organizations that help to prevent issues of child abuse and neglect.

The pinwheels, widely recognized as a symbol of child abuse prevention, are located throughout James City County and are placed by various groups in James City County, including the James City County Police Department.

“When you drive by the Law Enforcement Center, you will see our public display of our commitment to help this very important campaign. When you are asked about the garden, please know that the pinwheels represent bright futures for our children. All children deserve a happy, healthy childhood. We all play a role in the healthy development of our community’s children,” explained Gennie Bellas, a James City County detective.

The pinwheels will be taken down at the end of April by department staff.
