YORKTOWN — April 8 is Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day across the nation, and in Yorktown, the event offers a chance to donate to a local free medical program for those in need.
At the Ben & Jerry’s Riverwalk Landing location, all ice cream will be free on April 8 from noon until 8 p.m. Volunteers from Lackey Clinic and Ben & Jerry’s staff members will be on hand to scoop ice cream, with 100% of donations from the day donated to Lackey Clinic.
Lackey Clinic is a faith-based nonprofit providing free and charitable healthcare to uninsured adults in Virginia.
“The ice cream is free, but thanks to those who have generously donated, we have been able to raise almost three-quarters of a million dollars worth of patient care for medical care for those in need in York County. It’s a fun day with music, face painting and a lot of happy people,” Bob Deramo, owner of the Ben & Jerry’s location, said.
At the event, patrons can visit Critters 4 U Rescue’s pet adoption event and there will be live music from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will also be face painting and balloon animals provided by Buttarcups Fancy Facepainting from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
In the past, the event has had celebrity scoopers, congressmen, senators, Coast Guard captains, brass from the Yorktown Naval Weapons Station, York-Poquoson Sheriff’s deputies and more.
Donations can be made to Lackey Clinic at the event or online at lackeyclinic.org.
