VDOT to Hold Public Hearing on Pocahontas Trail Widening and Street Completion Project

(VDOT)

JAMES CITY COUNTY — The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing Wednesday, March 26, regarding the Route 60/Pocahontas Trail widening and street completion project from 6-8 p.m. at James River Elementary School.

The event will provide the public with an opportunity to learn about the proposed improvements to the existing two-lane Route 60/Pocahontas Trail roadway from James City County Fire Station No. 2 to Magruder Avenue/Route 656.

Proposed plans are to widen Route 60 to three lanes, providing one continuous center left-turn lane and one travel lane in each direction with an eight-foot shared-use path and a five-foot sidewalk, each with a landscaped buffer from vehicular traffic, according to VDOT.

The project also includes new crosswalks and pedestrian refuge areas, curb and gutter, drainage improvements, lighting, transit stop improvements and utility improvements. The project is designed to address delays along Route 60 due to congestion, improve access for emergency response, provide bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, improve drainage features and expand transit infrastructure, it added.

The proposed project plans and the National Environmental Policy Act document in the form of a Categorical Exclusion can be viewed at the public hearing or at VDOT’s Hampton Roads District Office in Suffolk.

Project information can also be viewed at VDOT’s Williamsburg Residency Office. Call 757-253-5138 ahead to ensure the availability of appropriate personnel to answer questions.

Property impact information and tentative construction schedules are available for review at the above addresses and will be available at the public hearing.

Written or oral comments can be given at the public hearing or submitted to Mr. Wali Zaman, P.E., Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 7511 Burbage Drive, Suffolk, VA 23435 by April 5. Comments may also be emailed to Wali.Zaman@VDOT.Virginia.gov. Reference “Route 60 Widening Project Comment” in the subject line.
