WILLIAMSBURG — The Williamsburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will participate in Wreaths Across America on Dec. 14, and the group needs help sponsoring the final necessary wreaths.

Wreaths Across America’s mission is to educate the next generation, remember the fallen and honor those who serve. Each December, Wreaths Across America delivers wreaths to cemeteries across the United States to ensure that each service member has a wreath on their grave during the holiday season.

Robin Doucette, Regent for the Williamsburg DAR Chapter, is asking the public to consider a sponsorship of a wreath this holiday season.

“Bringing the Wreaths Across America program to Cedar Grove Cemetery three years ago was a perfect extension of our longstanding DAR mission to honor our veterans and active-duty military, as well as to educate our children. Members of the Williamsburg Chapter, NSDAR look forward to this special event each year to say ‘Thank you’ to those who once wore our nation’s uniform. We owe them a debt of gratitude that we can never repay,” Doucette said.

The Williamsburg DAR Chapter is participating in the nationwide event for the third year. On Dec. 14, at noon, the community is invited to a short ceremony and can place wreaths on veterans graves at Cedar Grove Cemetery. The event will be held rain or shine.

During the wreath-laying ceremony, each veteran’s name is said prior to their wreath being laid. Additionally, each grave will receive an American flag. There will also be a short program, including a color guard, the National Anthem, and short speeches.

Sherril Buckner, who oversees the Wreaths Across America event for the Williamsburg DAR Chapter, believes every service member at the cemetery should be honored.

“The veterans at Cedar Grove are from all service branches and all conflicts, serving both peacetime and wartime. When they signed up or began their service, they did not know if they were going to serve in peacetime or wartime, yet they served anyway,” Buckner said.

Currently, the Williamsburg DAR Chapter is just a few wreath sponsorships away from ensuring that all veterans in the cemetery will have a wreath this holiday season. Wreath sponsorships are $17 and can be purchased through the Williamsburg DAR’s Wreaths Across America website. The deadline for sponsoring a wreath in 2024 is Dec. 3.
