WJCC Schools on Stage: Warhill High School Presents Peter and the Starcatcher

“Peter and the Starcatcher” will be staged at Warhill High School (WHS Theater)

WILLIAMSBURG — Warhill High School will stage its spring musical “Peter and the Starcatcher” May 3-5.

“Peter and the Starcatcher” serves as the prequel to Peter Pan. The show centers on a young orphan and his friends who are shipped from Victorian England to a deserted island ruled by an evil king. While on the ship, the boys meet Molly, a star catcher in training. After the ship is overrun by pirates, the boys band together with Molly to go on all kinds of adventures.

This is Warhill Theater Director Jacob Noble second production on the Warhill stage. After directing “Freaky Friday” last year, Noble wanted to challenge the actors with something different.

“Last year, the show was very much your traditional musical, where it was very straightforward and what you would expect to see from a musical. I knew going into this year that our competition show in the fall was going to be a very movement and metaphorical piece and so I wanted to do something that mirrored that,” Noble said.

Ashley Remmert, who plays Molly, is excited to share the show with the audience.

“I want the audience to feel happy when they see our show. There’s just something so special about this show that makes it fun. I always think back to when I was younger and how making friendships were some of the best moments of my childhood. I love that this is the feeling that you get from this show and I want people to feel like they can reminisce on their childhood memories as well,” Remmert said.

Maria Pozdniakova, who plays Peter, is a senior who will be leaving the Warhill Stage behind come graduation in June. She’s glad to make one more memory with her castmates in her final show on the stage.

“This show really does feel like we’re just playing with friends and has such a childlike aspect to it. We’re really just so excited to all be together and creating this for our community. This show, because of the metaphorical aspect, allows for so much creativity and actor interpretation which has been a blast,” Pozdniakova said.

Through the show, Noble hopes the audience remembers what it is like to be a kid again.

“We themed this whole season around growing through the pain that we go through. Something I really love about this show is how fun it is and how much the audience laughs throughout the whole thing. As we get older, we forget that innocence that we used to have and how much fun being a child is. We’re playing pretend by putting on this show, but adding the layer of kids coming together to make believe and making this world all around them that the audience gets to join in on,” Noble said.

Peter and the Starcatcher will open on Friday, May 3 at 7 p.m. On Saturday May 4, there will be a 2 p.m. matinee and a 7 p.m. show. The show will close on May 5 with a 2 p.m. matinee.
