WILLIAMSBURG — A local family is grieving following the loss of 20-year-old Joshua Barkley after an accident on Christmas Eve.

Support for the family has been pouring in from the community. A GoFundMe, established by Barkley’s sister Brittany Thurman, has been gaining traction daily. According to Thurman, she started the fundraiser to help alleviate the stress on her parents.

“I’m just trying to do what I can to help and raising funds is about the only thing I can do that makes a difference. I don’t want my parents to worry about any financial worries while trying to process this,” Thurman said.

According to Barkley’s obituary, he played outside linebacker and defensive end at Warhill High School until his graduation in 2022. He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time with his family and friends. This coming February, Barkley and his girlfriend are expecting a baby boy, Isaiah.

The fundraiser will help offset funeral expenses for Barkley, as well as create a trust fund for his son.

The funeral will take place on Jan. 2 at Liberty Live, York River Campus, beginning at 1:30 p.m. On Jan. 3, the family will host a celebration of life at the Williamsburg Moose Lodge beginning at 4 p.m.

“This love and support from the community has been amazing and unbelievable. Every one of you are amazing and me and my family have so much gratitude. I love you all, and Josh would be so amazed and happy to know how much all of you care.”
