JAMESTOWN — The Colonial Dames of America (CDA) recently paid a visit to Jamestown Rediscovery to rededicate the newly-restored North Gates, which were reinstalled this summer.
The North Gates were donated by CDA over 100 years ago in 1907. The gates, located at the entrance to Jamestown Island, stood the test of time, but over the course of more than a century had endured weathering.
According to Jamestown Rediscovery, beginning in 2019, with the support of CDA, Director of Collections and Conservation Michael Lavin enlisted world-renowned monuments conservator Jonathan Appell of Atlas Preservation and master welder Scott Hederer of Custom Welding LLC to develop a restoration plan. After intensive work on the iron gates and the concrete pillars, the restored gates were reinstalled this summer.
Visiting CDA members participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Memorial Church, presented a donation to the Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation for the restoration and reinstallation of the North Gates, and toured the site with the senior archaeology team and curators.
“The CDA North Gates are more than simply an entrance to Jamestown Island,” said President of Jamestown Rediscovery Foundation James Horn in a news release. “They stand as a symbol of the enduring friendship and partnership between The Colonial Dames of America and Jamestown, and we are deeply humbled by their generous and continuing support.”
