YORK COUNTY — As the fall weather kicks off around the Historic Triangle, the York County Parks and Recreation Department has a slew of outdoor events planned for October in New Quarter Park, 1000 Lakeshead Drive and other venues.
- Drum Circle in New Quarter Park- Fourth Sunday of the Month from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
- Admission- Free
- Virginia Master Naturalist, Madeline Vann will lead a Drum Circle for the public. Participants will meet at the multi-purpose field by the office for an hour of fun and relaxing drumming. Drumming is a great way to bring people together, reduce stress, and connect with nature. Drums and shakers will be provided on a limited basis. You are encouraged to bring your own drum or shaker, as well as a chair and/or blanket to sit on.
- Skate, Rattle, & Roll at Dare Elementary School – Every Friday in October. See times below.
- Admission – $5 per Session (Includes Skates) – Rollerblade rental $3 extra – Concessions Available
- Each skate night will feature two sessions. The first session is for elementary school participants (grades K-5) and their families from 6-8 p.m. The second session is for middle school participants (grades 6-8) from 8:30-10:30 p.m. ***EACH CHILD MUST BE PRE-REGISTERED*** Go to the York County Parks website to register.
- MASKS ARE REQUIRED during check-in, skate pick-up & return, concessions, and while sitting in the gym. MASKS ARE NOT REQUIRED while skating.
- No Refunds for no shows. If Parks and Recreation cancel for any reason, you will be given a credit on your household account.
- Fall Walk and Talk Series at New Quarter Park – Oct. 9 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- Admission – Free
- Join Master Naturalist Adrienne Frank our a walk of New Quarter Park to learn about butterflies. Participants will meet at the basketball court. From there you will take a stroll down to our beautiful half-acre butterfly habitat.
- Participants must pre-register on the York County Parks website.
- Fall Wash and Talk at New Quarter Park – Second Friday of the month 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
- Admission – Free
- Join Park Interpreter Sara Lewis as she cleans, sorts, and identifies artifacts dating back to the 1700s found right here in New Quarter Park. You will be fascinated by the many interesting things you will learn from Sara about what these artifacts tell us. Participants will meet at the park office.
- Pre-registration on the York County Parks website is requested.
- Fall Bird Walks at New Quarter Park – Fourth Saturday of the month 8 a.m. – 10 a.m.
- Admission – Free
- Join the Williamsburg Bird Club on a hike through beautiful New Quarter Park. Birders can see osprey, blue herons, and dozens of different types of songbirds. The group will meet in the main parking lot at 8 a.m. Binoculars are available to rent for free in the park office.
- Fall Stories By the Fire at New Quarter Park – Oct. 23 5:30 – 7 p.m.
- Admission – Free and open to all ages.
- Join Professional Storyteller Lee Ann Rose as she tells Halloween theme stories of witches and other creatures of the night in this family-friendly program. Participants can dress up and make smore’s by the fire from 5:30 to 6 pm with Lee Ann beginning right after.
- Pre-registration on the York County Parks website due to limited seating.
- Fall Pumpkin Carving and Treat Trails at New Quarter Park – Oct. 24 3 – 5 p.m.
- Admission – $10. The fee covers a pumpkin for 1st child only. The fee for the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th child is $5 each with an optional $5 fee for each additional pumpkin.
- Children ages 5-12 will dress up to walk down one of the park’s beautiful trails to collect candy and other fun items. Afterward, children will get to choose a pumpkin from our pumpkin patch to carve out at the park. The fee covers the trick or treats trail, a pumpkin, carving tools, and carving designs.
