YORKTOWN — The Anchor Scholarship Foundation has awarded a $2,050 grant to a rising college freshman from Yorktown.
The Anchor Scholarship Foundation is a nonprofit scholarship organization that supports higher education for dependents of U.S. Naval Surface Force.
Since its chartering in 1980 by the Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Officer’s Wives Club, the foundation has awarded $1,300,000 in scholarships to over 1,200 eligible family members.
This year, the foundation awarded and distributed 32 scholarships totaling $106,350.
The foundation announced that Brittney Coleman of Yorktown as a local recipient this year.
Coleman was awarded a $2,050 scholarship that was sponsored by Raytheon.
She will attend Northwest Florida State College as a freshman majoring in Biology.
“The Anchor Scholarship Foundation is excited to be able to help these Surface Navy family members in their pursuit of higher education, but more importantly, we are thrilled to acknowledge each student’s achievements despite the challenges of a military life coupled, this year, with COVID-19,” Joy Eyrolles, Executive Director of the Anchor Scholarship Foundation, said.
In its forty-first year of supporting U.S. Navy Surface families, the scholarship has grown from awarding $2,000 in scholarships to totaling over $106,350 in 2021.
The foundation awards Anchor Scholarships to dependents of active duty, retired or honorably discharged Surface Navy members to put towards secondary education and industry certifications.
The service member must have served a minimum of six years active duty in commands under the administrative control of Commander Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (COMNAVSURFLANT) or Commander Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet (COMNAVSURFOR).
Surface Navy Sailors are required to have their surface warfare qualification.
Scholarships are open to both children and spouses of qualifying members.
For dependents of sailors who have served a minimum of one year on board, Anchor Scholarship Foundation also awards Ship’s Company Scholarships for USS Arleigh Burke, USS Bulkeley, USS Chung Hoon/USS Gettysburg, USS Cincinnati and USS Thomas Hudner.
The foundation raises money through events such as 5Ks, golf tournaments and pub trivia.
