WILLIAMSBURG — William & Mary (W&M) men’s tennis graduate students Lev Kazakov and Brenden Volk as well as sophomore George Davis earned All-CAA honors, the league announced on Tuesday.
Kazakov earned a spot on the All-CAA First Team in singles, while Volk and Davis were one of three pairs selected to the all-league first team in doubles. Davis also garnered a spot on the All-CAA Second Team in singles. It marked the first All-CAA awards for both Kazakov and Davis, while Volk earned All-CAA in doubles for the second time in his career.
Kazakov, who joined the Tribe as a graduate transfer this season after a strong career at Cornell, posted an 8-3 singles mark at the No. 2 position. He won five of its final six matches, including a pair of memorable three-set wins on line two in the CAA Semifinals vs. Elon and Championship vs. UNCW. In total, Kazakov was 4-0 against CAA competition at No. 2. He earned CAA Player of the Week honors on March 31 after a victory at No. 2 in the Tribe’s 4-3 road win at JMU.
Davis and Volk finished the year, winning five of their final six matches, including wins in the CAA Semifinals and Championship at the top spot. The duo wrapped up the year, upsetting the No. 66-ranked UNCW pair of Bruno Caula and Daniel Groom in the title match at No. 1, 6-3. The duo, which earned VaSID All-State honors last season, tallied an 8-5 mark at the top doubles position. In the Tribe’s 4-3 win at JMU on March 27, the duo clinched the doubles point, rallying from a 5-2 deficit to win at No. 1.
Davis was one of eight players across the league to earn All-CAA honors in both singles and doubles, garnering a spot on the All-CAA Second Team in singles. He finished the year at 8-6 overall and 6-3 at the No. 3 position. Davis claimed wins on line three in both the CAA Quarterfinals and Championship match. He also picked up a key win at No. 3 singles in the Tribe’s thrilling 4-3 win over rival Old Dominion on April 10.
The Tribe won seven of its final nine matches in 2021, ending the year at 9-6. The Green and Gold advanced to the CAA Championship match with an exciting 4-3 win over No. 2 seed Elon in the semifinals.
