YORKTOWN — Fifth graders at Yorktown Elementary School had some special visitors stop by their class Monday morning.
President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden made a visit to Yorktown Elementary School to kick off their Hampton Roads tour.
The school visit was part of the White House’s Getting America Back on Track: American Family Plan Tour to push for a return to in-person learning.
Air Force One arrived in Newport News, where the Bidens were greeted by Governor Ralph Northam and Virginia First Lady Pamela Northam.
The president and first lady then headed to Yorktown Elementary, where they were greeted by Yorktown Principal Kelly Denny, York County School Division (YCSD) superintendent Dr. Victor Shandor, YCSD Chief Operations Officer Dr. Jim Carroll, YCSD Chief Academic Officer Candi Skinner, YCSD Associate Director of School Administration Cheryl Parr and Congresswoman Elaine Luria and her daughter, Violette.
The president and First Lady stopped by Cindy Bertamini’s fifth grade class to talk to students and see what they have been learning about since returning to in-person learning.
Bertamini explained to the Bidens about a recent project that she gave her students to help them learn about the four different storm elements.
The first lady and community college professor was in her element as she walked around the classroom, listening as several students explained to her about their projects.
“What do you want to be when you grow up?” Biden asked several of the students.

A fashion designer, chef, hair stylist, and music artist were among the answers.
“This is ninth grade right?” Biden joked. “It seems like ninth grade. You’re smart.”
Mrs Bertamini, who she said loves science, explained to the Bidens that she has tried to incorporate as much hands-on learning as possible since York County has returned to in-person learning.
The Bidens approached the students where they sat masked and socially distanced and chatted with them.
President Biden asked the fifth graders how they liked doing virtual learning before.
The reviews were mixed among the students. Some said that they did not like it, while one student told the president that it was “kind of fun” because they were able to eat during class.
The first lady asked the students what they liked best about being back in school.
“Recess,” one student answered.
“Recess? No!” the first lady joked.
The Bidens spent a few more minutes at the school before heading to an HVAC workshop at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk at 1 p.m., where they gave remarks.
The Bidens will return to the White House from Norfolk.
