PENINSULA — One animal shelter on the Peninsula is getting financial support to help stray animals in Hampton Roads.

On Monday, the City of Newport News announced that Petco Love, a nonprofit organization promoting animal welfare, gave the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter (PRAS) a $30,000 grant to “support their lifesaving work for animals in the Hampton Roads area.”

“Today Petco Love announces an investment in Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter and hundreds of other organizations as part of our commitment to create a future in which no pet is unnecessary euthanized,” said Susanne Kogut, president of Petco Love. “Our local investments are only one component. This month, we will also launch the first of our national tools to empower all animal lovers to drive lifesaving change right alongside us.”

PRAS, which is located in Newport News, also serves other nearby localitlies including the cities of Hampton, Poquoson, and York County.

According Newport News’ release on Monday, the animal shelter has averaged an intake rate of 6,200 animals per year since 2015.

“Petco Love’s support for the Peninsula Regional Animal Shelter helps us continue to offer educational opportunities and programs through outreach to the communities that we serve,” said Roger Iles, the PRAS manager. “This grant will allow us to further the shelter’s goals and commitment to utilize new and innovative lifesaving opportunities and programs that will bring an awareness of the challenges that exist in our communities associated with lost, stray and community animals.”
