Remote learning is hard enough, but having a hands on activity can make it a little bit better.
The Williamsburg Regional Library is handing out free STEM kits for elementary schoolers.
Barry Trott, spokesman for the Williamsburg Regional Library, said the library works with Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools science coordinator Jaclyn McDonnell to develop these kits based on the current science curriculum for each grade.
Here’s a list of what each grade is focusing on and what is included in each kit:
Kindergarten: Clouds and rain. Kit includes shaving cream, a plastic cup, water and food coloring.
First grade: Sundial. Kit includes a paper plate and a straw in clay attached to the bottom of the plates.
Second grade: Wind Vane. Kit includes a paper plate, pencil, thumbtack, straw, cardstock and a compass.
Third Grade: Testing Motion. Kit includes a toy car, foil, corrugated paper, and felt.
Fourth Grade: Plant growth. Kit includes a potato, a clear cup, toothpicks, and an observation chart.
The STEM kits are available at the Youth Services desk at either the Williamsburg Regional Library or the James City County Library until supplies run out. Instructions are included with each kit.
