James City County Police has hosted their “Stuff the Cruiser” food drive since 2014.

This year is no different, as the department plans on collecting food donations for local shelters, despite the pandemic.

The food donated will be used to provide Thanksgiving meals for local families in need, according to a public post from James City County Police.

Donations will be distributed to the following locations: New Zion Baptist Church, Grove Christian Outreach Center, House of Mercy, King of Glory Church, Chickahominy Baptist Church.

“We wanted multiple organizations throughout the County so as to limit the transportation required for people to have access,” department spokespwoman Stephanie Williams-Ortery wrote in an email.

About two to three officers will be at the Walmart Neighborhood Market off Monticello Avenue with a police cruiser ready to be packed with donations. They will have a trailer on standby in case there is an overflow of donations, something Ortery-Williams said usually happens at the event.

The food drive will be on Saturday, Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Settler’s Market Walmart off Monticello Avenue. All food donations are accepted, except for perishable items like frozen foods and produce.
