The 30th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act – July 26, 1990 [Free Read]

There are moments in our lives, and times in our history, that we remember very clearly, monumental or life-changing events.

I remember July 20, 1969 when Neil Armstrong took his first step on the moon, or in more recent times, I sadly remember September 11, 2001, when America was under attack.

These were huge moments in our lives and our history.

Do you remember July 26, 1990? Did you know that on that day in history, 30 years ago, the largest-to-date ceremony to ever take place on the South Lawn at the White House, with over 3,000 in attendance, was the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by President George H. W. Bush?

Do you remember these words: “Let the shameful walls of exclusion finally come tumbling down!” These words were declared by President Bush at that moment in history when the Act was signed into law.

The Arc of Greater Williamsburg has had the privilege of serving adults with disabilities in our community since 1976. The average age of more than 200 Arc clients is over the age of 30.

As The Arc prepares to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the ADA, we thought it would benefit our community for you to get to know The Arc and the true meaning behind the ADA and its impact on your fellow neighbors.

Throughout the next several weeks, we invite you to visit our website, thearcgw.org, and social media outlets (Facebook | Instagram) , as we celebrate, educate, share, and encourage you to get to know more about The Arc Family, our abilities, our dreams, goals, and challenges.

We hope you will embrace this moment in history and become our partner, our advocate, our friend, and even an Arc volunteer, as we navigate our personal history to seek not only our civil rights but our basic human rights. We invite you to see us as your peers, not as someone that needs your help.

Did you know – that you can be the difference in the life of a person with a disability?

Help us create access, equity, and inclusion throughout greater Williamsburg and embrace our dream to live “A Life Like Yours!”

Please enjoy our upcoming “Did you know?” campaign and recognize the rights and abilities of all members of our community.
