Those craving fried chicken and bubble tea can get their fix at this new Williamsburg business.
Kung Fu Tea, a locally-owned franchise selling various tea products and Taiwanese fried chicken specialties, opened in New Town in early June, said manager Steven Lin. This past month has been a soft opening — a grand opening event is planned for July 9.
Lin said it has been difficult to open a new business in the midst of a pandemic.
“We’ve lost a lot of people in this shopping center because the movie theater is not open yet,” Lin said. “It’s not as good as we expected because of COVID-19 and stuff that is going on right now, but we’re doing alright.”
Lin said he expects business to pick up more as the state continues to reopen.
The business isn’t currently offering delivery or curbside service, but guests can order through mobile delivery services such as GrubHub.
Kung Fu Tea is a New York-based business that serves bubble tea, also known as pearl milk tea or Boba milk tea.
The business will sell bubble tea, a Taiwanese drink invented in the 1980s and mixed with milk or fruit and topped with tapioca balls. Drinks can be customized based on the topping, sugar and ice levels.
Toppings include “bubbles,” popping bubbles or different types of beans and jellies.
But the menu doesn’t stop there.
The national chain in 2018 formed a partnership with TKK Fried Chicken, which was founded in the Wanhua district of Taipei, Taiwan. As a result, locations such as the new franchise in Williamsburg also offer a variety of fried chicken options.
TKK Fried Chicken is known for mixing bold flavors from Taiwan with frying techniques from the United States.
Kung Fu Tea’s food includes original, crispy mild and crispy spicy chicken sandwiches in a variety of combos, platters and salads.
Lin said the grand opening event will most likely involve special discounts or combos for chicken and tea purchases.
