Memorial Day is going to look a little different this year.
The city of Williamsburg’s Parks and Recreation Department typically hosts a Memorial Mile event each year, this year the department will be collecting virtual stories of military, EMS and law enforcement members who have fallen in the line of duty.
The public was invited to submit a story about their fallen hero by writing a 100-word biography of the person, including their name and hometown.
Submission deadline was May 18.
The virtual stories will be shared on the Williamsburg Parks and Rec Facebook page on Monday. For more information, visit the city of Williamsburg online.
York County will not be hosting any Memorial Day services this year, but it will be broadcasting last year’s ceremony on its cable channel, WYCG TV, which can be accessed on channel 46 for Cox and channel 38 for Verizon.
The broadcast will run at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Monday and can be viewed online through the county’s local programming webpage.
But not every locality is commemorating the holiday this year.
James City County will not be hosting any services or special events, said Renee Dallman, spokeswoman for the county.
Fred Gaskins, spokesman for the city of Hampton wrote in an email on Tuesday, saying there was nothing planned for Memorial Day at this time.
Kim Lee, spokeswoman for the city of Newport News was not immediately available for comment.
