Two more employees have tested positive for the coronavirus (COVID 19) at Newport News Shipbuilding.
So far the company has 12 confirmed cases with eight cases confirmed in the past week.
One individual worked at Building 4558 East, Mid-Yard Office, and was last on company property on April 2, according to the shipyard’s website.
The other employee worked at Building 600-2, Off-Yard Office, 39th Street, and Marshall Avenue, and was last on company property on March 23.
According to shipbuilding’s website, any individual who tests positive is quarantined and NNS will contact anyone who is at risk for exposure to self-quarantine.
The company updated its reporting information Saturday, categorizing government civilians, Navy personnel and contractors as non-NNS employees. Cases at other sites where NNS employees work will be tracked locally.
“Starting April 4, we are changing our reporting structure to follow Department of Defense guidance regarding naval personnel and ships,” according to the website. “As a reminder, if a space number is included with ship location information, please remember that if you have public discussions about our ships, providing a space number with the function of that space is against security policy.”
The company had been reporting whether the individual was a shipyard employee, government civilian employee, Navy personnel or a contractor.
The company’s website also had tracked where the cases were located on company property using the following categories: Off Yard Offices, Mid-Yard, South Yard, North Yard, USS George Washington CVN 73 and USS John F. Kennedy CVN 79.
There are now a total of seven cases in the Off Yard Offices, four in the Mid-Yard and one case in the North Yard. There are no cases reported in South Yard at this time.
As of Saturday, James City County has 111 cases, Newport News has 48, Hampton has 39, York County has 19, Williamsburg has 10 and Poquoson has 3, according to the Virginia Department of Health’s website.
