Search underway for two men after canoe capsizes in York County

Several agencies are searching for two people after their canoe flipped near the Dare Marina in Yorktown.

York Fire Chief Stephen Kopczynski said the canoers had launched around 11:30 p.m. Sunday at the Boat House Cove area of Dare where it capsized at one point.

First responders were notified shortly before 4:30 a.m. Monday and were sent to the scene in the 100 block of Jennings Drive, fire officials said.

Three men had gone out on the canoe – one was able to swim back to shore after the canoe flipped and call for help — he came ashore around the 100 block of Jennings Drive in Dare.

The man was initially treated there — he first declined to be hospitalized but decided later to be taken to the hospital. He has since been released.

Authorities said search teams found the canoe near Bennett’s Creek around 8 a.m.

The U.S. Coast Guard, York Fire & Life Safety, Poquoson Fire-Rescue, Virginia Marine Resources Commission and York-Poquoson Sheriff’s deputies are at the scene.

They are being assisted by Virginia Marine Resources Commission, Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, James City County Fire Department, Hampton Fire-Rescue and the Virginia Port Authority Maritime Incident Response staff.

The Virginia State Police also responded.

Search crews are asking residents along the water in Dare, Tabb, Seaford and Poquoson to check their properties to see if the young men have come ashore — authorities are not releasing the names but said they are in their 20s.
