Those driving on the Colonial Parkway might have to find a new route soon.
Various parts of the parkway have been under construction recently but the Colonial National Historical Park announced on Monday that one of the parkway’s tunnels would be closed for maintenance for approximately a month.
The Williamsburg Tunnel of the Parkway is set to close from Feb. 3 through March 2 for maintenance.
Work includes:
- Saw-cutting
- Replacing damaged pavement
- Sealing roadway joints
- Sweeping and pressure washing the road surface
- Installing a centerline
- Repairing the brickwork in the south portal arch
- Upgrading light fixtures and replacing bulbs
During the closure, the National Park Service has scheduled concurrent work to minimize the length of time and to prevent multiple closures.
Drivers can expect to see detour signs to divert Jamestown-bound traffic near the parkway traffic circle, along Visitor Center Drive to South Henry Street, and to the Newport Avenue interchange with the parkway.
At all turns, signs will read “Colonial Parkway Jamestown Detour.”
For those heading toward Yorktown, drivers will follow the detour in the opposite direction which will have signs at all turns that read “Colonial Parkway Yorktown Detour.”
