Comte de Grasse Street in Historic Yorktown will close to motor vehicle traffic on Sunday and remain closed for approximately two months for construction.
York County officials announced in a recent news release the closure will allow for improvements to a “drainage issue” and the installation of a sidewalk.
“When walking down Comte de Grasse, you can visibly see where rainwater runs and erodes the sides of the road,” said Gail Whittaker, spokeswoman for York County. “This project will improve that and the sidewalk is a welcomed addition.”
Comte de Grasse is a one-way street typically traveled to get to the Yorktown Beach picnic area from Water Street but during the closure access to the picnic area’s parking lot will be restricted.
“The beach picnic area remains open to pedestrians throughout the road closure,” Whittaker said in the news release.
E1-X Enterprises is the company contracted for the project, including the installation of the five-foot-wide brick sidewalk that officials said would “make the trip to and from the Victory Monument and Water Street more safe and pleasant for pedestrians.”
