In observance of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, the York-Poquoson DARE Office is hosting a “Drug Take Back” event Saturday.

The office is accepting unneeded or expired pills, patches, and liquid medications at no cost and with no questions asked to residents presenting with the drugs, officials said in a recent news release.

“To help prevent drug abuse or theft, and to ensure drugs are disposed of properly,” officials said.

New this year, “Drug Take Back” sites are also accepting vaping pens and cartridges without internal batteries in an effort “to help combat the continued vaping health crisis across the country,” DEA officials said in a news release.

In their last weekly update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention counted 1,479 lung injury cases from 49 states, with 50 to 99 cases from Virginia, and 33 confirmed deaths in 24 states associated with the use of e-cigarette or vaping products.

Residents can drop off medications at the York-Poquoson DARE Office at 5338-D George Washington Memorial Highway where the team will also be accepting non-perishable canned or boxed food items for the Peninsula Food Bank from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The York County Beautification Committee is also scheduled for the event where they’ll offer paper shredding services to residents and accept plastic bags for recycling.
