Riverside Health is providing free flu shots across the Peninsula, including Williamsburg, Hampton and Newport News.
The free shots are available while supplies last for people 14 years old and older.
The vaccine takes two weeks to take affect.
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus, which can cause mild to severe illness, according to Riverside’s news release.
While flu season usually occurs in the fall and winter months, the length and severity of each flu season is unpredictable and constantly changing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The CDC recommends people 6 months and older get the flu vaccine. Pregnant women, children younger than 5 years old and adults 65 years and older are at a higher risk for developing more serious flu symptoms.
Some preventative measures include washing your hands, avoiding close contact with people who are sick and getting vaccinated.
